This Month's Featured Music - Jukebox 45

THE JUKEBOX – a long established icon and symbol of good times in American-made high fidelity music available to the masses for pocket change.

By the mid-fifties the older 78 RPM record playing juke boxes had been replaced by the 45 RPM models. The advent of the “45” pretty much coincided with the birth of Rock & Roll music!

As new Rock & Roll artists released new materials, the record companies realized the two sided single was the best way to introduce their materials to the music-starved teenagers across the country.

Companies like ROCKOLA, WURLITZER and SEEBURG cashed in on the music market with newer and sleeker models wherever people congregated. Company labels like PHILLIPS, SUN, CHESS, MOTOWN, CAPITOL and many others whirled for hours while the wondrous sounds of youth blasted away.

Many memories are kindled by the thoughts of a Jukebox and a special “45” being played on it. If you missed out on these good times and excellent music, we’ll try to take you back, ’cause we are …

Let Greenville, SC’s #1 Oldies Band bring memories of the fantastic 50s, 60s and 70s to your main event. To us the greatest music to ever come along was during the 50s and 60s. If you enjoy music by Elvis, The Beatles, Wilson Picket, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Dave Clark 5, The Animals, The Righteous Brothers, James Brown and all the other great artists from that era then you’ll love hearing us perform live for you and your friends.

GHS Battlemud Laurens County Mud Run

The GHS Battlemud Laurens County Mud Run is a fun and dirty event featuring natural obstacles along a course at the Laurens Family Y. The event is a partnership with the Laurens Family Y and Main Street Laurens open to 4-person teams in both a competitive and non-competitive categories.

The 4th Annual GHS Battlemud Laurens County Mud Run will be the toughest two-miler but also the most fun! Begining on a Nature Trail, the course will be challenging and continue through large pipes under Anderson Drive and end back on the trails with a slip-n-slide type final obstacle! The course will include 20 challenging obstacles, many of which will be natural obstacles located on the property of the Family YMCA of Greater Laurens.

The teams are 4-person teams and must include at least one adult 18 years or older. The competitive teams aim to be the first to cross the finish line and want everyone to get out of their way! The non-competitive teams also aim to cross the finish line, but are out to have fun getting dirty! Awards will be given to the top 5 teams and the first team out will be at 9AM.

Register early, beacuse each participant will receive one free t-shirt, but the shirts are only guaranteed if you register before August 18, 2017.

Bring the kids and family along to cheer you on! A kids area with bounce houses and will be available as well as an opportunity for the kids to slip-n-slide after the race is over.

Proceeds from the GHS Battlemud Laurens County Mud Run will benefit the Family YMCA of Greater Laurens, Main Street Laurens and AMI Kids in their non-profit efforts to better our community. So, gather your closest friends and family members who enjoy a little friendly competition, while getting REALLY dirty at the same time, for this exciting and challenging event!

Free & Open to the public.

Squealin’ on the Square celebrates it 17th year of bringing family fun and delicious BBQ to the historic downtown. The first weekend of October each year sees the downtown square come alive with live music, arts & crafts, food and especially BBQ. The two day event kicks off on Friday and runs through 8PM on Saturday.

As a KCBS sanctioned event, Squealin’ on the Square is excited to participate in the new Palmetto BBQ Series SC BBQ Championship. This new competition series  will award the best BBQ Competitor in SC who has the highest cumulative points for participating in at least 4 of the 6 KCBS sanctioned events in SC. Squealin’ on the Square is the next to last KCBS event of the year for SC, so we are expecting a large turn-out of BBQ competition teams.

Squealin’ on the Square is presented by the non-profit, Main Street Laurens, as a way of raising funds to assist in their efforts to revitalize the Historic Downtown District. All proceeds from the event go back into the organization to help with projects such as facade grants for businesses, marketing of the downtown, decorative lighting in the downtown and implementation of the new Downtown Master Plan.

So, we encourage you to mark your calendars and join us for a good time, good food and good friends all while helping revitalize downtown Laurens!
