Public Square Improvement District Members

Main Street Laurens is one of only approximately 1,500 business improvement districts in the nation and one of only 3 in South Carolina.

Main Street Laurens operates efficiently and effectively because of the business improvement district. While ALL of Laurens benefits from a revitalized downtown, the greatest beneficiaries are the property owners and businesses on whom the tax is levied. Benefits include public improvements, organized special events, business recruitment assistance, cooperative marketing opportunities, renewed interest in the downtown area, among others. By increasing interest in the downtown area, the Main Street program helps create a positive image that locals and visitors associate with all of Laurens.

Over the past five years, the downtown area has come alive with building renovations, new stores, and more visitors: 22 new businesses have opened, 5 businesses have expanded, 26 new jobs have been created, 12 buildings have undergone renovation, over $725,000 has been invested by the private sector, over $2.2 million has been invested by the public sector, and over 20,000 people participated in last year’s Squealin’ on the Square BBQ Festival.
